Mentoring Matters: Three Essential Elements Of Success

The benefits of mentoring are myriad. For individuals, studies show that good mentoring can lead to greater career success, including promotions, raises, and increased opportunities. Organizations that embrace mentoring are rewarded with higher levels of employee engagement, retention, and knowledge sharing. In fact, mentoring has proved so beneficial that 71% of Fortune 500 companies offer mentoring programs to their employees.

While these statistics are encouraging, it’s important to remember that mentoring is not a magic wand that automatically creates success. The truth is that effective mentoring takes effort, and creating successful mentoring relationships requires specific skills, sensibilities, and structure from both the mentor and the mentee. Success happens when both parties take responsibility for making it work. Success happens when best practices are in place for the three key ingredients:

1. The Mentor

2. The Mentee

3. The Relationship

Do you know What Makes A Good Mentor?

The answer is - knowing what are his/her responsibilities are , and what are the efforts he needs to put in to achieve that , so as to give his 100% to the Mentee's bright career

The DO's and DON'T's for a Mentor to follow for a Successful Mentor-Mentee Relationship

1. Keep communications open

Help your mentee set realistic expectations. Also, if you know you will be unavailable because of business or personal travel, let them know.

2. Offer support

Encourage communication and participation. Help create a solid plan of action.

3. Define expectations

Help set up a system to measure achievement.

4. Maintain contact

Respond to your e-mails. Answer questions and provide advice, resources and guidance when appropriate.

5. Be honest

Be truthful in your evaluations, but also be tactful.

6. Actively participate

Engage in your own learning while you are mentoring, collaborate on projects, ask questions and experiment.

7. Be innovative and creative

Share your ideas, give advice and be a resource for new ideas.

8. Get to know each other

Remember that people come from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Get to know each other on an individual basis.

9. Be reliable and consistent

The more consistent you are, the more you will be trusted.

10. Stay positive

Recognize the work the mentee has done and the progress made.

For a better bonding , their are some points that the MENTOR has to keep in mind so as to avoid them

DON’T

1. Give Advice

Often, mentees will come to you for advice and as a mentor you feel obligated to share what you would do if you were in their shoes. Generally speaking, one’s role as a mentor is not to give advice. Giving advice can be useful if your mentee requires specific information or accurate answers. For example, if your mentee needed help locating a particular academic service on campus. However, I think it’s important for your mentee to practice thinking through certain challenges and arriving at a solution independently. In situations like this I would recommend starting off with providing your mentee with various solutions and he/she can decide whether that is the right approach. Over time, your mentee will learn how to come to solutions on their own. If you are asked directly for advice, try using statements like:

• What do you think?

• Let’s make a list of the pros and cons

• If someone was asking you the same question, what would you suggest?

2. Break Confidentiality

It’s very important to be mindful of people’s personal information and experiences. Any good mentor-mentee relationship thrives on trust, and that means confidentiality must be respected at all times. In addition, it’s very important to be respectful of your mentee. You should always refrain from speaking negatively and/or gossiping about your mentees.

3. Make Assumptions

Never assume things , or misinterpret instead discuss and keep things clear between both the mentor and mentee

Mentoring is the ART , where the
Mentor is the ARTIST , and
Mentee the CANVAS🌿

Mentoring is a great opportunity to deliver a rewarding and potentially life-changing experience for both the mentor and the mentee. It is one of the most important things a person can do to enhance their career and professional life. It takes time and commitment, but it is well worth the effort.

Whether you are the mentor or the mentee, it’s a win-win for your career , and that's what matters .
